Pennsylvanian’s are gearing up once again to help keep our state clean!

This year’s Great American Cleanup of PA runs from March 1st through May 31st, and both the PA Departments of Transportation and Environmental Protection are teaming up for the effort. “We’re asking for volunteers to help us with what is an ongoing challenge, which is the continual practice of people just…throwing stuff out of their cars,” says PennDOT spokesperson Rich Kirkpatrick.

Since the inception of the state cleanup event in 2004, over 1.9 million volunteers have picked up 91,869,507 pounds of litter and waste, 170,619 miles of roads, waterways, shorelines, and trails have been cleaned, and more than 164,836 trees, bulbs, and flowers have been planted! Volunteers have also removed over 258,823 tires and 226,395 pounds of scrap metal.

All registered events can receive free cleanup supplies such as bags, gloves and vests for volunteers, donated by PennDOT and the Keep America Beautiful organization.  Additionally, during the “Pick It Up PA Days”, which are scheduled from April 18th to May 8th, all registered events will have access to reduced or free waste disposal.
