(CALAIS, France) — Chaos broke out on Monday when French authorities demolished homes at a migrant camp known as the Calais jungle.
As riot police reportedly fired tear gas, migrants and protesters resisted demolition crews by throwing rocks to avoid having their homes destroyed, according to BBC.
Multiple shacks were on fire, reports said, and one migrant living in the camp told BBC, “Instead of protecting me the government is going to destroy the place I’m living.”
The demolition was allegedly an effort by the government to move people to official accomodations in nearby converted shipping containers, according to BBC.
Many of the migrants staying in the camp are hoping to reach the U.K., but many are worried about going to the official area and being forced to claim asylum in France, BBC reports.
