The Altoona School District Police Department could get some expanded powers under an ordinance introduced Wednesday night by city council.
Under the terms of the proposed intergovernmental agreement, school district police officers would be able to address certain issues in the city, including the pursuit of criminals for crimes that occur on school property and addressing parking complaints near the school.
School police would also be able to issue parking tickets and direct traffic outside of school buildings. Altoona Police Chief Janice Freeling says the school district and the city have been in discussions about the plan for a while.
If adopted, the intergovernmental agreement would go into effect by the beginning of the next school year.
