Gas Wells Instead of Wind Mills on Ice Mountain?

A proposed wind farm on Ice Mountain in northern Blair County may not be a go after all.

That’s because a natural gas supply has been found within the mountain, and it might provide a better deal financially for both Tyrone Borough and Snyder Township. Borough officials have already met with two companies interested in drilling on the mountain. And Tyrone’s solicitor is already drafting a potential lease.

Officials are still investigating all their options. One concern is the damage drilling could have on watershed property. The borough will hold a future public meeting on the issue.

Residents voted to support the idea of putting a wind farm on the mountain last year, when the issue showed up as a referendum on the General Election ballot.
