An Altoona landmark is one step closer to coming down.

AMTRAN’s board of directors made tentative plans to demolish the former Roaring River Mills building during a meeting Tuesday morning. The bus company expects to close on the 3-acre parcel within the next 30 days. AMTRAN is spending more than a million dollars to purchase the land, which is currently owned by long time Altoona businessman Norman Glucroft.

The property was originally part of the trolley works for the Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway. AMTRAN General Manager Eric Wolf says once the famous orange building has been demolished, the redevelopment project itself should move full-speed ahead.

AMTRAN will construct some new commercial office space, which should generate income for the bus company. Plans call for the creation of a bus storage garage, meeting and training facilities, and office space which will be leased out.
