Altoona Regional to Cut Nearly 50 Jobs

The Altoona Regional Health System says it’s trimming its workforce by nearly 50 workers in an effort to cut costs.

Nineteen vacant positions will also be eliminated. The health system is making the move to help offset nearly $1.8-million in budget deficits this operating year. The layoffs affect both union and non-union workers, plus management and other staff jobs.

Altoona Regional will also close a transitional care unit that currently operates out of the Bon Secours Campus. Hospital officials cite a drop in admissions and reduced Medicaid reimbursements as part of the reason for the move. And they cite a 6-percent increase in operating costs.

A memo outlining the layoffs will be distributed to employees later today.
