Pa. Supreme Court Urged To Block Beer License For Sheetz

Pennsylvania's beer distributors are asking the state's highest court to bar the Sheetz convenience-store chain from selling takeout beer in Altoona.

All six justices of the state Supreme Court presided over a hearing on the issue in Harrisburg on Wednesday.

The case has implications for beer lovers across Pennsylvania, because a ruling in favor of Sheetz could lead to many more places where they could buy beer by the six-pack. It also would mean more competition for the 1,300 distributors, which sell beer only by the case or the keg.

The Pennsylvania Malt Beverage Distributors Association said Sheetz should not be allowed to sell takeout beer unless it also sells beer for on-premises consumption in the restaurant of its store at Pleasant Valley Boulevard and 17th Street in Altoona.
