Letter Carrier Blitz Against Hunger
By Craig Schaffer
May 9, 2008, 07:54
Letter carriers in Altoona will stage a blitz on Saturday to combat hunger in America, conducting their annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive.
The national effort, in its 16th year, is the largest one-day food collection in the nation and the biggest community service effort by any union affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
Allan Faight, the Executive Director of Blair County’s Community Service Agency, says letter carriers will be focusing their efforts on restocking community food banks, pantries and shelters that many families will rely on throughout the summer.
Residents are being asked to put bags and boxes of non-perishable food and even toiletries out at their mail boxes for the letter carriers to pick up when the mail is delivered tomorrow.
With all signs pointing to a deepening recession, and with gasoline prices flirting with $4 a gallon, more and more families looking for ways to save money. This economic squeeze comes while 35 million Americans are experiencing what the federal government refers to as “very low food security.
