A local domestic abuse shelter is closing as the organization running it redirects resources to focus on providing safety for abuse victims in their own homes.

Family Services Inc. announced the closure of the Altoona shelter today. The group says the shelter provided a necessary safe haven for abuse victims when it opened more than three decades ago, but it required them to uproot their lives and share communal living spaces.

The group will now focus on helping victims stay in their own homes by securing protective orders and adding security systems. The group will officially close its doors February 1st.
